proclaimed "immigrindcore" band Chepang (based in NYC, but originally from Kathmandu, Nepal) take the ferocity of grind and kick it up ten-fold on debut album Dadhelo – A Tale of Wildfire. Along with a dual vocals, the politically charged band layer on the intensity with two drummers, which results in a sonic attack unlike any other.
This record picks up where their 2016 Lathi Charge EP left off, and is a relentless assault that incorporates elements of powerviolence, crust and punk into their unique delivery. Tracks like "Auda," "Kucho" and "Chameli" are short bursts of sheer grindcore chaos featuring an overwhelming amount of raw, visceral aggression in 40 seconds or less. However, there's also some unexpected variety in Chepang's sound, as Dadhelo – A Tale of Wildfire features a few slower, groove-filled
moments, such as on "Sojho Lato Pasu" and "Falame Fokso."
Tracks like "Saranarthi," with its pulverizing drumming, and "Choila," with its blazing solo, showcase how technically proficient these musicians are and reveal a penchant for interesting composition. That it also shines a light on Nepali issues in its lyrical themes makes Dadhelo – A Tale of Wildfire an impressive, thought-provoking release all around.
